Encouragement for Pastoral Life

On the side of my pull-down attic ladder is a sticker that says, “Weight limit 200 pounds.” If you know me, you see a problem. When I go up the ladder it bends a little. Sometimes I even hear a creaking sound. I try to move up and down quickly, without resting my weight in any one spot too long. The ladder has a limit.

Speaking of limits, can anyone relate to the frustrations of speed limits? In my experience not many people abide by them, unless law enforcement is in sight. But why is it instinct to push those limits? Do we forget that they’re in place for own safety and benefit? We’re fortunate to have these limits to keep us all in check.

Meanwhile, our lives are so filled with chaos, we might benefit from having our own agenda limit signs. Especially as pastors, we’re constantly trying to balance the lives of many with our own lives. Wouldn’t it be great if we each came with a sticker that let us know our load limit? It’s different for each of us. We’re not all the same, but we all have limits. We have physical limits, mental limits, time limits, ability limits, and capacity limits. It would be helpful if we had a computerized voice go off in our head saying, “Warning, you are approaching your limits.” Even though we may not have that computer voice, we do have warning signs that we are not obeying our speed limit and load limits of life. Those warnings include signs like unhealthy stress, loss of joy, rise in irritability, and physical problems. When we become aware of these signs, we can find comfort and rejuvenation in scriptures.

Encouragement for Pastoral Life: Scriptures About Burdens

“Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved,” (Psalm 55:22).

“I removed his shoulder from the burden: his hands were delivered from the pots. Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meribah. Selah,” (Psalm 81:6-7).

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls,” (Matthew 11:29).

These scriptures are incredibly comforting. They’re good reminders that we are human and need to set our limits. At the same time, we have a loving God who helps us find balance.
