Ever Feel Unrewarded as a Pastor? How to Find Encouragement

Stew on This Resources for PastorsPastoring often involves high levels of service and sometimes it feels like there is little appreciation or reward for it all. Yes, everyone knows it feels good to evangelize and serve others. Still, it is only human to appreciate recognition.

Sometimes remembering the accounts of those who came before you can be encouraging. Have you ever considered how Joseph’s story relates to leadership and being underappreciated? Do you remember Genesis chapter 40? Joseph was in prison. He was cruelly rejected by his brothers, sold as a slave into Egypt (a foreign land), falsely accused of a crime, and ended up in a dungeon-like prison.

When all of this was going on, Joseph probably didn’t realize fully what God was doing. He only knew of the single events that occurred. And he knew he didn’t like them. He didn’t like being sold as a slave, or thrown into prison, or later in the story being forgotten by the cupbearer. He couldn’t see at that time how they made sense. It probably was difficult not to feel cheated, especially since he was a man who sought after God and was faithful to Him.

Ring any bells? Pastors are often no stranger to going un-thanked or even worse being mistreated.

Remember Where to Always Find Appreciation:

But everyone knows how Joseph’s story progressed. He eventually experienced great success and even likely some solace when he eventually helped his brothers who had wronged him. Joseph certainly had to endure patiently and go unrecognized at times, but he was a tremendous instrument for God’s work. His recognition came from God. And his peace was found in God through all of it. Each of us are rewarded by God in our relationships with Him and can find our recognition in Him. He never fails us. Please find some encouragement as you shepherd your congregation and remember that He is your sustainer. Good things are to come.
