Life Balance Help for Pastors (How to Focus on the Purpose of Life)

Stew on This Resources for PastorsOver the past 20 years, I have tried to help people organize their lives for spiritual growth. It’s not an easy task. People tend to think spiritual maturity will just happen when they come to personal faith in Christ. But that is not the way it works. Scripture admonishes us to exercise self-control, to discipline ourselves to godliness, and to “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness” (1 Timothy 6:11). A disordered, unorganized, undisciplined, and chaotic lifestyle works against growing in Christ. When we think of life organization there are six life priorities that need our attention – family, work, self-care, service, friendships, and finances. We are to live balanced in each of these areas.

Yet many times we are so busy running from one thing to the next just trying to scrape by. All our running can easily become a distraction and hindrance that keeps us from knowing and enjoying God. To live a balanced, or synchronized life is to live out all the varied roles and responsibilities of life in a rhythmic, harmonious fashion. Living in synchronization is successfully juggling those roles and responsibilities simultaneously within a limited timeframe of days, weeks, and months.

It’s easy to be fooled thinking the latest and best “time-saving” techniques will free us to live a more organized, orderly, and less stressed life. But, of course, that rarely works. We just fill in the newly found spaces with more stuff we want to do. Or, we get bogged down in what other people want us to do. Have you been there? As a pastor, with endless responsibilities and demands, do you try a new technique or way of doing things in order to organize your time only to find a week or two later you are back to square one?

What gets in the way? Take a moment and reflect on your life.  Are you living by life’s compass (the word of God) which directs you to the true north of God’s will for your life? Doing so enables you to resist the pull toward magnetic north that reflects the thinking, ambitions, and values of the surrounding culture and society. Changing our way of thinking and getting our compasses aligned is the real technique we need. Whether it’s with family, work, friendships, or strangers, our works are to attract and point men and women to God.

As the Westminster catechism says, “the chief end of man is to glorify God and to love him forever.” Our purpose in life is to glorify God. We can show the watching world what God is like by the character and conduct of our lives. When our schedules are packed, when we are living chaotic, stressed, and exhausted lives, does that point others to Christ? Does it bring Him glory? Let’s ask ourselves how God is being glorified in us? Do we think about glorifying God? Do we aim for it? Let’s look at our schedules including work, meetings, family times, and leisure. How can we better glorify God through the attitudes we express, the words we speak, the things we do, and the reactions and responses we have?
